Skírnismál

Skírnismál is an ongoing collaboration with playwright and deviser Amber Williams – a translation and adaptation of the unattributed 10th Century Norse Eddic poem of the same name.

The young Viking warlord Freyr sits despondent in his palatial home, madly in love with Gerðr, the princess of their mortal enemies the Jöttun. He enlists the help of his charismatic second-in-command Skirnir, to brave the perilous journey to Jütunheimr and woo her on his behalf.

But as seduction turns to conquest and violent egos flare, the toxic engine of domination begins to show its hideous face, and the dark heart of Viking honour culture takes hold.

Originally workshopped as part of No Such Theatre's monthly Scrap new writing night, Skírnismál was presented in an expanded form as part of the Side/Step Festival in Islington in 2025.
